---Becoming a resident---

Permanent Residency: These two little words that can change the entire course of a migrant's life. Two little words that speak volumes for people wishing to make New Zealand their home. Two little words which are the most commonly queried.

How can you gain residence? There are many different routes through which migrants can obtain permanent residency in New Zealand. There are broadly 4 main categories of policy which you can apply under, these are: Skilled Migrant, Work to residence, Family and Business.

Before you qualify under any particular residence policy there are three main criteria which all residency applicants must meet. The first criterion is that you must be of good health. This is assessed by a medical and chest x-ray certificate which you must provide to Immigration New Zealand. The results of your test will indicate whether you will satisfy this criterion or not. The second criteria is that you must be of good character, this is assessed by you submitting a police clearance certificate for yourself or anyone included in your application who is 17 years and over. If you have any convictions or criminal history this will be taken into consideration in your application and if it is of a serious nature this will impact your application adversely. The third criterion is that you must have a high standard of English. The requirements of this criterion will vary slightly depending on your personal circumstances, overall anyone who is 16 years of age or older should be able to converse, write and read English to a high standard. Once you are sure you these criteria are satisfied there are the four broad categories you can apply for residence under.

The first category is the skilled migrant policy. This is for people who are qualified and able to contribute to New Zealand's economy in areas where we have a shortage of workers, where there is a potential for future growth or occupations which are classified as skilled. Under this policy you are awarded points for different areas such as your age, qualifications, work experience, current job and if you have any family who are New Zealand residents. The amount of points you are awarded will depend on your personal circumstances. Overall to be invited to apply for residence you must have at least 100 points.

The second is the category is the work to residence policy. This is for a person who possesses exceptional talent in sports or arts or those who are qualified in a highly specialized filed or one that is considered to be in demand in New Zealand. Generally to qualify for this policy you must have an offer of ongoing employment from NZ accredited employer with a salary that meets the base set by Immigration NZ, or sponsorship from a NZ arts/cultural or sporting organization as a result of your ability to contribute to NZ's future or an offer of full time ongoing employment in an occupation that is on the long term skill shortage list.

The third is the family policy. This policy allows people to strengthen family ties and remain close to their family members. To qualify under this policy you must first have a family member is a NZ citizen or resident who is eligible to sponsor you. You must be one of the following of a NZ citizen to qualify-partner, parent, sibling and adult child or dependant child. You must however meet the specific requirements under each particular policy depending on what relation you have to an NZ citizen or resident.

The fourth is the business policy. This is for people who have a history of business and the capacity to build new businesses and introduce new skills and technology in NZ. There are a number of business migration policies each is extremely intricate, you must meet the specific requirements under each business policy. Generally you are setting up a business and investing in New Zealand and because of this you are giving other New Zealander's work and making a financial commitment to New Zealand.
